How to Read Our Advice

Updated April 17 2025

Our advice is impact-focused. This means it is not general advice on getting a job and building a career. Instead, our advice is aimed at helping Christians to find highly impactful careers, mainly ones in our top focus areas.

By impact, we mean positive outcomes that conform with God’s redemptive plans. Our understanding of what counts as positive is grounded on what we believe to be God’s will regarding the world. In other words, impact is making the world more like God wants it to be. You can read more about our definition of impact here.

Our advice is directed at specific types of persons and situations. We want to be upfront about our core target audience to help you evaluate how well our advice fits your situation. The closer you are to it, the more we believe our advice applies. The advice on our website and other channels is aimed primarily at people who

  1. are committed Christians

  2. have an undergraduate or postgraduate degree or are currently pursuing one

  3. want to make a maximum positive impact in the world with their careers

  4. are interested in one or more of our top problem areas

  5. are analytical thinkers

  6. reside in the US or the UK

When we recommend certain career paths, we don’t mean to say that those who take these paths are better in God’s eyes. We recognize that many people are not in a privileged position where they can freely choose between different career paths or pursue a career in one of our top problem areas. But for the Christians who are, we want to help them use this position for good and make choices that serve their neighbor instead of focusing only on their own comfort and ambitions.

Our advice tends to focus on analytic ways of making career choices. We recognize that it’s possible someone hears a miraculous calling from God but it seems that is not the case for most of us. This doesn’t mean we don’t value prayerful hearing and discernment as an important part of the process of making career choices but much material on this is available elsewhere. Our focus is on more commonly neglected tools for Christian career discernment. These include analyzing personal fit, impact frameworks like ITN, career profiles and concepts, and stories of Christian role models.

Even within our core audience, not all of our advice fits everyone equally. Some of our advice is best suited for especially ambitious and high-achieving people. Many people have constraints like not being able to move for a job, requiring a certain level of work-life balance, etc. that might limit their options. Some people might also need opposite advice. For example, one person might need encouragement to explore a wider variety of options, while another might need to focus more on a single path.

We also want to point out that although we are Christians and strive to give advice that is consistent with scripture, we are not offering mentorship in the capacity of a spiritual authority such as a pastor. We are not a church or affiliated with any particular church. Our team may have different internal perspectives on some matters of faith.

Lastly, we acknowledge that impact isn’t all that matters. We do not think the pursuit of impact should be the sole thing determining our lives. Other commitments like family life and church are important, too. We do recognize that some people are called to a life of total service, like the Apostle Paul, not every Christian is called to a ministry as totalizing as his. Overall, we recommend a reflective approach to our advice and applying it to your life.
