Luke is a Christian working for start-up in Africa with the aim of tackling extreme poverty.

He is a CFI reader and impact mentor.

Academic Background

I hold an undergraduate degree in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While I found Physics fascinating, towards the end of my university years, I began considering 'impactful' careers like global development. I became involved with the Christians For Impact community and decided to build career capital through management consulting positions to eventually transition away from Physics.

First Job

After graduating, I worked as a consultant for the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) for 2.5 years. During this time, BCG collaborated with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, providing me the chance to work on global development projects and experience living outside the US. Equipped with skills from BCG, I wanted to transition to a startup in the global development field. Networking with companies recommended by my BCG colleagues led me to a role I believed would have the most impact.

Career Journey

  • 2019-2021: Associate at Boston Consulting Group in Chicago

  • 2021-2022: Consultant at Boston Consulting Group in Kenya

  • 2022-Present: Growth Lead at Kapu Africa, based in Kenya. Kapu Africa is an early startup aimed at reducing the cost of living for Kenyan households to free up their income for other expenses. In my role, I focus on testing strategies to grow Kapu’s customer base. My responsibilities also include app testing, meeting customers, and designing promotional materials.

Advice for Young Christians

My faith has been the primary motivation for using my career to make a positive impact on the world. The philosophy behind Christians For Impact has provided me with the tools to do so. For those considering working in a global development startup, I recommend working in a low or middle-income country, as the impact can often be more direct. It’s crucial to work hard while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Ultimately, strive to significantly help others if you can.

Luke’s Impact

We believe Luke is on a high-impact path due to Kapu Africa’s potential to make food prices less expensive for everyday Africans, and Luke’s ability to to earn-to-give for impactful charities, especially if Kapu becomes a highly profitable startup.
